Gear4 speaker dock supports USB audio for Jelly Bean at Google I/O 2012

Another day, another speaker dock. We initially dismissed Gear4's latest accessory at Google I/O 2012 until we noticed that the attached Nexus 7 was playing audio via the USB port instead of the headphone jack (or wirelessly over Bluetooth for that matter). It turns out that Jelly Bean supports USB audio, a feature that's bound to spearhead a whole new generation of accessories for Android devices. Gear4's universal speaker dock with alarm clock radio is the first to handle USB audio. While the sound for any app can be routed to the USB port in Jelly Bean, the functionality is missing from older versions of Android. Thankfully, Gear4 includes an app with its accessory that can be used to set alarms, sync time, tune the radio and play media over the USB port on legacy versions of Android. Want to know more? You'll find our gallery below and our hands-on video after the break.

Appliance Maintenance: Clean it Up - New Homes Section

Published: June 28, 2012Posted in: Home ImprovementTags:

Our home appliances are most meant to make our lives easier. The trade-off? Convenience calls for maintenance. It should be noted that even appliances with cleaning cycles must be cleaned routinely, especially in areas with hard water.

It?s always best to first consult the owner?s manual for each particular machine. Have you?ll find recommended cleaning schedules as well as specific products that work best. Beyond this, however, you?ll need to know the home?s water hardness homes with harder water call for more regular cleaning.

Appliance manufacturer?s recommend products that contain citric acid, which can reduce mineral buildup, for occasional use for hard water.

Although everyday household items such as bleach, vinegar, and baking soda may be used, store-purchased items are specifically designed to do their jobs and can therefore spare you any guesswork. If you choose household items, try these.

For washing machines, bleach is useful for eliminating odors, preventing lime and detergent build-up. Be sure to wipe down the door gasket after each load.

White vinegar and bleach are great for regular cleaning of your dishwasher. The two are aimed at preventing lime, rust, and detergent build-up, similar to the remedy for washing machines.

To maintain water flow and reduce odors in your garbage disposal, as well as eliminate food and grease build-up on blades try running the appliance after adding ice cubes and rock salt. Furthermore, orange or lemon peels are great at reducing grease.

Use white vinegar to perform routine cleanings on drip coffee makers; this will tackle mineral buildup, and coffee oil residue.

Philadelphia Restaurant Review: No-brow Americana at Square ...

Frito bag tacos at Square Peg in Philadelphia

Matt Levin wants to provoke you. He wants to ruffle your expectations, challenge received wisdom about what belongs in high-concept dining, needle you into ingesting things on Saturday that you spent Friday trying to ban from your kid?s school cafeteria.

At Moonlight in New Hope, he speckled lobster tails with Pop Rocks. At Adsum, he used Tastykakes as slider buns. Not long after the hospitalization (and in one case, near-death) of nine college students at Central Washington University who?d made the mistake of guzzling Four Loko, Levin presented a three-course meal featuring the ultra-caffeinated? alcoholic ?energy drink?
in every dish and drink pairing. It got national media coverage.

He also helmed the kitchen at Lacroix? between 2006 and 2008, where his cooking was lauded as some of the best (perhaps the best) in the city. But Levin thrives on a headier sort of attention, and Square Peg (which slipped into the generically handsome brick skin of the old Marathon Grill at 10th and Walnut streets in March) is the Twitter-happy chef?s latest bid for it.

?We?re a diner-inspired restaurant,? a server chirped about a month after it opened. ?You?ll see a lot of classic dishes, but with twists and unusual ingredients.?

Just how unusual depends on how frequently you eat out of vending machines and powdered-drink packets. Levin pickles watermelon chunks in Kool-Aid?, cuts his bacon marmalade with Heinz 57?, and dumps carnitas into a two-ounce FRITOS? bag. The registered trademark icons are the menu?s, not mine, but their unnecessary inclusion typifies the deliberate cognitive dissonance that defines this place.

Standing before a photo-mural of Dust Bowl-era laborers, one server spoke reverently about ?Chef? while detailing mass-branded ingredients that called the capital-C honorific into serious question. Another vouchsafed that the cheesesteak potpie was ?actually a metaphor of a potpie,? but didn?t actually recommend it.

So how does it all go down?

?Chef?s signature dish,? my most spirited of four servers assured me, is fried chicken. And you won?t find better. Levin brines premium birds in pickle juice, airs them out properly, and cooks them in a pressurized deep fryer whose accelerated speed renders the flesh so juicy you can hardly believe the skin, which is as crunchy as cracklings. It comes with a honeyed hot sauce whose electrifying cayenne kick and high-amplitude sweetness are everything you want with fried fowl, even if it rides roughshod over the side of braised collards. Framing the plate is that Kool-Aid-doctored? watermelon, which caters to people who like Jolly Ranchers at the expense of those who actually like watermelon.

That theme recurred in Levin?s turkey sliders, which buried skimpy folds of good Lancaster turkey breast beneath sickly-sweet candied yams, cranberry relish, desiccated nuggets of sage stuffing, and marshmallows out of a bag. Levin?s Heinz-bacon marmalade was alarmingly sweet, but the tender meatloaf beneath it was a savory slice of full-throated flavor.

It seemed that for every decent dish, there was a mediocre one?and another that failed outright. As a perfectly scaled set: Deep-fried polenta pegs were bewitchingly creamy, the burger felt perfunctory, and a creamed-corn cr?me caramel was an eggy, revolting mess.

Square Peg?s alcohol-spiked milkshakes are best-in-class, but what to make of the synthetically flavored ?blackberry? whiskey cocktails? One came to me by mistake (the server offered to ?hit it with grapefruit juice,? but not to bring the drink I?d actually ordered), one came on purpose, and both tasted like something mixed by Sigma Nu?s hazing director when the roofies ran out.

The carnitas in Levin?s Frito-?bag tacos contain aji amarillo, one of my favorite and most rarely encountered chili peppers, but a bloodhound could scarcely track it through the obliterating flavor of the chips. It may be possible for a smart chef to elevate junk food, but here, the junk drags everything else down. And ultimately, these are somebody else?s flavors?the kind concocted in those synthetic factories lining the New Jersey Turnpike. Levin?s habit of enriching his cooking with products that have impoverished our food culture could perhaps be deemed post-modern irony. But irony is a lousy basis for cuisine.

So is gluttony, as embodied by his ?foie gras double down,? which sandwiches the delicacy between fried chicken-cutlet patties. (I don?t regret its unavailability when I dined.)

And so is carelessness. As in roasted cauliflower riddled with warm and cool spots, like something poorly reheated. And limp lettuce. And dry stuffing. And missing parmesan crisps on the grilled romaine. AND drinks delivered 10 minutes apart to a twosome, so that a thirsty man has to watch a sheepish man sip. Later, when we asked to split a shake, Miss Hit It With Grapefruit answered, ?Sure. Do you just want two straws? Or do you want it no-homo??

Well, I guess she had just witnessed me drink that sorority-sister punch. And at least her Tourettic comment was authentic. Too much of the food and drink here felt contrived.

Levin has talent. I?ve tasted its fruits, elsewhere and (too rarely) here. But what ultimately ruins Square Peg is that it puts that talent?and its customers?at the mercy of something altogether more suspect: Levin?s judgment.

Hornets select Davis with No. 1 pick in NBA draft

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Best in the country and No. 1 and 2 in the NBA draft. The celebration goes on for Kentucky's kids.

The Wildcats became the first school to have the top two picks and tied a record with six players taken overall Thursday night.

After the New Orleans Hornets made the long-expected selection of forward Anthony Davis with the first pick, Charlotte followed by taking fellow freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

"It's crazy," Davis said. "Michael is a great player. We have two down and four more to go. Hopefully, all of them will go in the first round."

They didn't, the only disappointment for the Wildcats. They settled for four in the first round and a tie with North Carolina, which won the race to four picks ? all in the top 17 selections.

Harrison Barnes (No. 7, Golden State), Kendall Marshall (No. 13, Phoenix), John Henson (No. 14, Milwaukee) and Tyler Zeller (No. 17, Dallas) all went between Kidd-Gilchrist and the next Kentucky player, Terrence Jones at No. 18 to Houston.

Zeller's rights were later traded to Cleveland for a package that included No. 24 pick Jared Cunningham of Oregon State.

Otherwise, it was the Wildcats' night, starting with a hug between Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist after the first selection.

"My arm was shaking and my hands were sweaty. Got up and hugged Michael, my best friend, wanted to hug him for a minute," Davis said. "When my name got called, wanted to make sure he stayed close."

He did ? following Davis as the next player to climb onto the stage and shake Commissioner David Stern's hand.

Kentucky got its fourth first-round pick at No. 29 with Marquis Teague, another freshman, who is headed to Chicago as a possible replacement for the injured Derrick Rose. Doron Lamb went 42nd to Milwaukee and Darius Miller was 46th to New Orleans.

Only UNLV in 1977 had six players drafted ? but none in the first round.

John Calipari has been criticized for recruiting "one-and-done" players, they stay the required one year and leave, but he looked thrilled hugging his two stars at the start of the night.

It's been a long time since a school made such an impact at the top of the draft.

UCLA had the Nos. 1 and 3 picks in 1969, when Milwaukee took Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ? then Lew Alcindor ? and Lucius Allen went third to the Seattle SuperSonics.

Davis will begin his pro career in the same city where he ended it with a national title. College basketball's player of the year as a freshman was the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four despite shooting just 1 for 10 from the field in the championship game, grabbing 16 rebounds and blocking six shots in the victory over Kansas.

Davis slipped on a blue and purple Hornets hat above a conservative gray suit that took no attention away from basketball's most famous eyebrow. Davis even attempted to capitalize on the attention his unibrow gets, trademarking "Fear The Brow" and "Raise The Brow" earlier this month.

On the floor, Davis has the agility of a guard ? and he was one only a few years ago.

The 6-foot-10 Davis averaged 14.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.7 blocks, becoming a dominant defender after growing 7 inches from the start of his junior year of high school.

A season after the Hornets traded longtime star Chris Paul, Davis is ready to be their centerpiece, since playing for the Wildcats means he's already accustomed to plenty of attention.

"Like I said, at Kentucky we had it all the time, especially the six who played, we had the spotlight all the time," Davis said. "I think it really prepared me."

Charlotte, coming off a 7-59 season and the worst winning percentage in NBA history, had been open to moving the No. 2 pick if it found the right deal. Instead, Michael Jordan's team went with Kidd-Gilchrist, whose selection by the Bobcats was loudly cheered, a sharp contrast from the boos Stern received when coming out to announce the picks.

The new Charlotte swingman played in high school at nearby St. Patrick's in Elizabeth, N.J., and fans chanted "MKG! MKG!" as he walked off the stage. Though he and Davis talked before the draft, they didn't discuss the history the Wildcats were about to make.

"No. I was shocked at first," Kidd-Gilchrist said. "I was shocked. But no, we didn't. We didn't at all."

Florida's Bradley Beal went third to Washington, making it three SEC freshman in the first three picks. Cleveland followed with the surprisingly early pick of Syracuse sixth man Dion Waiters at No. 4.

Thomas Robinson of Kansas, who hoped to go second, fell to Sacramento at No. 5. Portland took Weber State's Damian Lillard at No. 6 with its first of two lottery picks, and Barnes was taken seventh by Golden State.

After Washington's Terrence Ross went to Toronto and Connecticut's Andre Drummond to Detroit, the Hornets rounded out the top 10 by taking Duke guard Austin Rivers with a pick they acquired in the Paul trade. Rivers hugged his father, Boston coach Doc Rivers, who came to be with his family instead of with the Celtics, who owned two later first-round picks.

Davis was the only clear-cut pick entering the draft, and there were some early surprises. Players such as Waiters and Ross went higher than expected, while Robinson dropped to the Kings.

"I really didn't know where I was going to end up at, but it is a bit of a surprise," he said, tearing up when talking about his difficult journey that included the deaths of multiple family members in college. "I didn't work out for Sacramento at all, I probably talked to them about once. But I'm here, so I'm meant to be here."

Houston took Jeremy Lamb of Connecticut at No. 12 with its first of three top-20 picks. But the Rockets, who also had the Nos. 16 and 18 picks, were hoping not to use all of them, instead packaging them for an established player after their pursuit of the Lakers' Pau Gasol fell through last year.

The Rockets tabbed Iowa State's Royce White at No. 16 and Terrence Jones two picks later.

Jared Sullinger, once considered a top-10 pick, ended up in a draft free-fall over concerns with his back but was finally taken at No. 21 by Boston. The Celtics followed with Fab Melo of Syracuse, giving them two potential replacements if Kevin Garnett doesn't return.

The NBA champion Miami Heat took forward Arnett Moultrie of Mississippi State at No. 27 with their first-round pick, but traded his rights to Philadelphia for the rights to LSU center Justin Hamilton and a future first-round pick.

Call: Special issue of Ethics and Information Technology (ETIN) on the

Call for Papers for a Special Issue of Ethics and Information Technology (ETIN) on the Internet of Things (IoT)

The vision of the Internet of Things portrays a world where physical objects are connected to the Internet, through technologies such as radio frequency identification (RFID), sensors and smartphones. Internet-enabled objects can share sensor data with web services and applications. As the physical and virtual worlds begin to interact with one another, boundaries between these worlds begin to erode. Our interaction with computers moves away from the desktop and into the environment, and becomes increasingly intertwined with our everyday lives. As this happens, we lose the ability to examine the artifacts we interact with as computing technology. They become invisible and infrastructural.

The sensing and monitoring capabilities of the Internet of Things often raises concerns of privacy. The ubiquitous nature of the Internet of Things raises questions regarding the autonomy of the people that (sometimes unknowingly) interact with it. It raises questions regarding trust. Besides these concerns, the Internet of Things also holds large positive potential. It can help people and monitor their energy consumption (down to individual appliances), encouraging a more sustainable lifestyle. It can help authorities monitor the structural integrity of dikes, benefiting the safety of regions. In short, many of the positive and negative implications of our interactions with the Internet of Things are related to our (moral) values.

Considering these ethical and societal implications, the urge to call for some form of regulatory measures to be taken only seems natural. However, Internet of Things technologies are developing at a rate that policy makers can scarcely keep up with. Moreover, access to means of creating these technologies is no longer limited to large corporations and their research and development departments. Startups with a handful of employees are able to create technologies like Pachube. What?s more, individuals now have the power to make an Internet of Things. Open source hardware projects such as Arduino give individuals the means to create ubiquitous computing technology. Thriving communities such as Instructables.com share information on how to make anything from solar panels to pressure sensors. Fab labs offer means of digital fabrication such as laser cutters, CNC machines, and rapid prototypers to individuals. And with global smartphone penetration at around 10%, a considerable part of the world?s population is carrying around an array of sensors and computing power at any given moment. Tools such as Processing for Android make it easier than ever to write programs for these devices. The Internet of Things is being developed as we speak.

It is during development that many of the ethical issues begin to take shape. Hence, it makes more sense to think about these issues then, rather than once these technologies have been entered widespread use. There is a great opportunity to shape these technologies into what we consider (ethically) desirable during design and development. To take advantage of this opportunity, designers and developers need ways of considering ethics during design.

This special issue will focus on dealing with the ethics of the Internet of Things. The core concern here is not reflecting on the implications Internet of Things, rather it is ways of reflecting on the ethics of the Internet of Things and acting on these reflections. What means do we have to deal with ethics when building the Internet of Things? How can we design for specific values such as trust, autonomy, responsibility and privacy? This is the research focus of ethics in IOT-i (www.iot-i.eu): ?Is it possible to address the main questions and issues of Ethics and IoT as a kind of ?label?, much like an eco label, saying these products, apps, services are privacy friendly, energy neutral, have open standards? Brother of lesbian teen shot in head: She's 'fighting'

Courtesy of Hilario Chapa

Siblings Patricia Martinez, left, Hilario Chapa, and Mary Kristene Chapa on April 28, 2012. Kristene Chapa was found shot in the head, along with her girlfriend, in a South Texas park on Saturday. She is recovering in the intensive care unit of a hospital.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

When Hilario Chapa went to a hospital to identify his sister, who was found shot in the head along with her girlfriend in a South Texas park, her face was unrecognizable. He and another sibling had to check her hands and feet and the rest of her body instead, in order to determine this was Mary Kristene Chapa, their sister.

But days after the brutal attack that left Kristene?s girlfriend, Mollie Olgin, dead, the 18-year-old has opened her eyes and is making inquiries about her recovery, though she has to write on a clipboard and use sign language to communicate, and she has little sensation on the left side of her body, her brother said.

?I do believe she knows what?s happened, but she hasn?t chosen to talk (about) it on her own,? he said. ?I?m under the impression that she doesn?t know? who did it.

?I think she?s pissed about what happened to her and I think she?s ready to get up and take off walking if she could,? he added.

The swelling from the gunshot has gone down, but it's unclear when she'll be able to leave the intensive care unit, said Chapa, 32, who also spoke to NBC Latino.

?All that we?ve gotten from the doctors is that she is making very ? impressive progress,? he told msnbc.com, saying it had been "rough." "I can?t even imagine how the other family feels about this situation. ... It?s very tragic.?

Olgin, 19, and Chapa were found in a grassy area of the park by a couple Saturday morning with gunshot wounds to the head in Portland, Texas, Police Chief Randy Wright said. Olgin, a first-year university student living in Corpus Christi, died; Chapa, of Sinton, was alive and rushed to an area hospital.

Police have recovered a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun at the scene, leading investigators to believe the shootings occurred where the pair was found, but they haven?t found the weapon. Two witnesses said they heard what could have been gunshots or firecrackers just before midnight last Friday but did not report it at the time, he said.

In the community of Portland, the crime rate is low, with the last homicide occurring in 2010, Wright said. The police haven?t established a motive for the attack on the girls, who were planning to spend some time in the park that fateful Friday night before seeing a movie, Olgin?s father, Mario, told local television station kiiitv.com.

"Information from family and friends indicates that Mollie and Mary were engaged in a same-sex relationship. However, there is no current evidence to indicate the attacks were motivated by that relationship," the police chief said.

Wright told msnbc.com on Monday that: ?It appears as if ? this was not just a random attack, but that?s something that we really have to develop over time.?

Friends reel from shooting of teen lesbian couple in Texas
Father of slain lesbian teen: 'Justice will be served'

The thought of an attack on his sister because she is gay is incomprehensible to Chapa. She is an ?all-American kid,? who excels at her studies as well as at softball (she is a pitcher), and is well liked, he said.

?A lot of people want to speculate it was a hate crime. I just can?t comprehend why somebody would shoot two ? 18 or 19 year old girl(s) over a hate crime,? he said. ?The brutality of it, you know, it?s just unimaginable.?

Police are investigating the shooting of two teenage girls in a same-sex relationship in a small Texas community along the Gulf of Mexico. KRIS reporter Lindsay Curtis has the story.

?I know that Texas has a lot of stereotypes ? but South Texas really is a good place,? he added. ?You don?t see a lot of hate crimes going on down here. You don?t hear about gay bashing or anything like that.?

Chapa didn?t know his sister was gay before the shootings, though he had thought she might be. He said his mother and other sister already knew. Friends say the pair had been going out since mid-February.

?Our family is very supportive,? he said. ?We will take Kristina ? for who she is and what she wanted to be, and we will support her in that.?

Chapa said his sister has maintained a stoic face: "You just see her fighting," he said, noting she was eagerly asking questions about her condition.

?She?s moving her right side very strongly,? he said. ?But her left side, they haven?t used that word (paralysis), it?s too early to tell. ... She just hasn?t moved it.

"No one is saying she?s paralyzed," he added, noting that he believed his parents had said she experienced some feeling on her left side.

Kristene has written Mollie?s name down a few times, but Chapa said he worried about telling her she was killed, fearing it could cause a medical setback.

?I'm kind of afraid," he said. "She is in such a fragile state right now.?

?The shooting has taken its toll on the family. The parents are maintaining a 24-hour vigil at the hospital and Chapa said he was initially a wreck.

Doctors have told them almost no one survives this kind of shooting, especially given the long period of time between being shot and found. It was an "amazing thing,? he said.

The shooting has also hit the family hard financially. Chapa?s father had just started a new job in West Texas and had not yet enrolled for health insurance, so Kristene is without coverage. They are seeking donations to help them pay for the medical care, which doesn?t yet have an end in sight. (Donations can be made here)

The family has yet to meet with Olgin?s family, though they hope to soon and to provide them support as well, said Chapa, who had never met Mollie.

Chapa has taken time off work from his job as an equipment cleaner at the Corpus Christi Army Depot to focus on his sister?s recovery. During these tough days, he said it is Kristene who gives him encouragement.

"I can honestly say that just watching my sister progress, watching her come back to us, and ? seeing her strength, it gives me strength,? he said. ?There?s nothing that anybody can tell you ? all you can really do is just hang onto hope and just watching her gives me hope.?

Glencore battles to save its bid for Xstrata

LONDON (Reuters) - Commodities trader Glencore battled to save its coveted $26 billion bid for miner Xstrata on Wednesday after key shareholder Qatar stunned the pair with a late demand for better terms.

The Qatari intervention pushed the deal to the brink as it prompted a string of shareholders to revisit their own particular concerns, such as soaring executive pay and fears that the combined entity would take on riskier business.

Qatar, which had remained silent for months as it built the second-largest stake in Xstrata, said in a statement late on Tuesday that it supported the principle of the deal but wanted 3.25 new Glencore shares for every Xstrata share, up from the 2.8 on offer.

The 11th-hour call will make it almost impossible for the deal to go through on current terms, several sources close to the deal said, leaving just two days for Glencore to sweeten the offer or delay shareholder meetings scheduled for mid-July.

The very public move also emboldened other wavering investors, particularly those angry over the hefty packages being offered to retain top executives at Xstrata, including an extra 29 million pounds over three years just to keep Chief Executive Mick Davis.

"The intervention by Qatar was unexpected but highly welcome and will certainly bolster the resolve of current holdouts," Simon Wong, partner at corporate governance watchdog and shareholder advisory firm, Governance for Owners.

In the first sign of movement, Glencore said it was considering proposals put forward by the board of Xstrata to change certain aspects of the management incentive arrangements.

Several sources familiar with the situation said the proposed changes included tying the retention packages to performance and shifting the plans from cash to equity. One source added that the tie to performance would specifically involve linking pay to cost cuts through the new group.

Paul Lee, director of Hermes Equity Ownership Services, which is voting on behalf of around 1 percent of Xstrata's investors, said a simple bump-up in the ratio would not be enough to persuade them to back the deal.

"Xstrata to our mind has a pretty good record in risk management. That is less true of Glencore. Lots of investors are most troubled by the ratio and the retention packages, but they haven't really focused on this issue. The immediate question over price is pretty irrelevant in that context. (But) on the pay side, perhaps the board will have to assess where they are when they truly understand the depth of investor feeling. They have misjudged this quite significantly."

Analysts and other Xstrata shareholders warned that Glencore could simply refuse to budge on the larger issue of the deal structure, putting the bid at risk and delaying any subsequent effort for at least six and perhaps as long as 12 months.

"Whether Glencore now wishes to raise its offer, having faced down independent shareholders for the last four months, is questionable," said Neil Dwane of CIO Allianz Global Investors Europe, another top 35 Xstrata investor.

"The Qatar ratio would be circa 10 percent dilutive to Glencore. In fact, given the coordinated global economic slowdown, an argument could be made for actually lowering the price to reflect worsening prospects for miners."

The Thomson Reuters-Jefferies CRB index <.crb>, a barometer for commodities, has fallen by about 14 percent since early February, when Xstrata and Glencore announced the deal.

CHARM OFFENSIVE

The statement triggered intense negotiations and an emergency charm offensive from Glencore executives trying to understand the Gulf state's motivations and bring them back onside.

Meetings between Qatar and Glencore were taking place in London and Doha, people familiar with the situation said.

At a ratio of 3.25 percent, the offer would be worth $30 billion as opposed to $26 billion for a ratio of 2.8.

The structure of the offer gives minority investors substantial power - opposition from just over 16.5 percent of the total shareholding could sink the deal, given approval is required from 75 percent for the main vote on the offer, and Glencore does not vote.

The vote on pay requires a simple majority, but both will need to go through for the deal to succeed.

Glencore, already Xstrata's largest shareholder, with almost 34 percent, had been expected to improve the terms of its all-share deal in the early days after it was announced, but it stuck to its guns, as Xstrata faced falling thermal coal prices and increased uncertainty over Argentina and Peru - key to its growth prospects.

MOVING TARGET

On Tuesday, before Qatar's unexpected announcement, Xstrata shares were trading around a 2.6 ratio, implying the market was not expecting a change to terms. Shares in both firms moved wildly on Wednesday, with Glencore down 2 percent at 0845 EDT and Xstrata down 0.2 percent in a rising FTSE 100 <.ftse>.

Analysts doubted that Glencore would raise its bid as high as 3.25, the high end of initial expectations and a level at which some say the deal could destroy value for Glencore.

"We believe a bump - probably from 2.8 to 3.0 Glencore shares per Xstrata share - may be necessary to win over (Qatar) and other Xstrata shareholders," Jefferies analysts said. "However, we do not believe Glencore will bump to a ratio of 3.25 times."

Analysts said failure to secure the deal would not only cause a short-term drop in Xstrata shares, currently trading at a premium to the sector, but would also prove damaging for Glencore, whose bosses have long traded on their reputation as dealmakers.

It could also prove damaging for Qatar, which has invested more than $4 billion to become Xstrata's largest minority shareholder.

Several sources close to the deal said on Tuesday that Qatar's demand for 3.25 was likely a negotiating position.

"In our view, the news about Qatar requesting a bump and the recent strong shareholder opposition to the Xstrata management retention awards are problems. But ... these are likely not insurmountable hurdles to the proposed Glencore Xstrata merger," Jefferies said.

"We continue to expect this proposed merger to happen."

Richard Marwood, a portfolio manager at AXA Investment Managers, a top 40 Xstrata investor, said the external pressure from Qatar would give Glencore an opportunity to revise the terms "without too much loss of face".

A collapse of the deal would also be a blow to a long list of bankers involved in the deal, including Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan and Deutsche Bank.

Glencore and Xstrata have until Thursday to alter the terms of the deal without having to change the dates of shareholder votes, set for mid July.

Glencore and Xstrata have declined to comment on the Qatari announcement.

My View: Grading art in a standardized-test world - Schools of Thought

Courtesy Dunbar LylesBy Katie Lyles, Special to CNN

Editor?s note: Katie Lyles has been teaching art in Jefferson County, Colorado, for seven years. In addition to her classroom duties, Katie has been part of her school?s cabinet, the Jefferson County Strategic Compensation Steering Committee, and the Leadership Academy for the Colorado Education Association. She was also a member of TURN and a delegate representative for JCEA.? Katie is part of the steering committee for the Center for Teaching Quality?s New Millennium Initiative.

It takes a thick skin to be an elementary art teacher. And it?s not because of the clothes ruined by paint, the challenge of finding storage space for over 500 sculpture projects, or the glitter that sneaks into the most unlikely places.

No, what requires a thick skin is continually battling public perception that art?especially at the elementary level?is an ?easy break in the day? for students. When I tell people that I?m an art teacher, I?m often greeted with a patronizing response that goes something like this: ?Awwww! It must be fun to color all day!? That?s usually followed up with a stimulating question such as, ?Do you have any students who eat glue??

Truth be told, I do have fun coloring all day?while teaching color theory, elements of landscape, how to create visual interest through patterns, and the difference between a portrait and a still-life?and this is just with my second graders (who, by the way, have never attempted to eat the glue!).

Sadly, most people?s perceptions about art education come from their personal experience as students. Art classes look a lot different from a seven-year-old?s perspective than from a teacher?s perspective.

For one thing, teachers are responsible for measuring students? competency and progress in art. With the assessment lens ever widening?and teacher evaluations often based on student performance on standardized tests?the question of how to assess subjects that do not have a standardized test attached to them is a complex but necessary question.

Some may be shocked to know that subjects like art are, in fact, tested, but not in a fill-in-the-bubble-while-your-palms-sweat way.? I test my students in a variety of ways, which I?believe leads to a more accurate evaluation than one-time standardized tests.

Using multiple measures may not be ideal for a quick, state-wide assessment, but from my experience, this ?portfolio approach? yields more accurate results for a subject like art, where the concepts are demonstrated through project-based learning.?A portfolio approach allows teachers to measure different projects and assessments by a student rather than just one test.? This allows for a more accurate view of a student?s learning and growth because it uses a variety of assessments and data points to measure a student?s understandings.

Allow me the indulgence of describing my ?perfect world? scenario for assessing art classes.? Teachers would look at the following to evaluate students (and to improve our own instruction at the same time):

? Works in progress: Are students applying concepts and skills outlined in the curriculum guide? In art, it is important to measure the process and not just the final product because students demonstrate many concepts as they?re working. This formative evaluation leads to a more accurate assessment of a student?s understanding.

? Videos of student/teacher interactions: Video can help teachers look closely at students? engagement during lessons, as well as identify and troubleshoot spots of confusion.

? Written answers to questions: Not only do written questions reinforce writing skills, but they assess students? understanding of vocabulary, safety instructions, and overarching topics of instruction.

? Final project: How does the end product incorporate concepts and skills that were taught?? Here, teachers are measuring demonstration of the outlined curriculum?meaning students don?t necessarily need innate artistic talent to meet the grade-level standard.

In this ideal world, technology plays a large role. Teachers can collaborate and learn from one another using online data banks of student lessons. Teachers in the same non-tested content area can use similar projects to increase reliability among the outcomes.

Online tools allow for the creation of online galleries that showcase not only students? finished art products, but the learning process as well?which is so essential in a subject like art.

We already have a great information bank from generous bloggers who devote time to sharing their content area lesson plans. I?ve found projects outlined in a photo-gallery style that align with the curriculum content standards from my district, and have tried them out in my own classroom.

Not only can using online galleries help assess student work, they can also help connect parents to what?s happening in the classroom.? Having an evaluation program like this would also help me improve, since I?d be able to see my teaching through an objective lens. Teaching colleagues could also comment and offer advice.

Best of all? The public can see for itself that my students don?t eat the glue.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Katie Lyles.

~Requests~ from ~Wudges~ [which means free crap]

Yo.
So, I'm bored and uninspired, but I wanna play with my watercolors. Figure giving people stuff won't be a bad deal. (: Good for my karma and what-what.

COOL, DESCRIPTIVE CHARACTERS ONLY. Or else you'd better have a damn good reference picture. If they feel generic or Su-ish(/Stu-ish) to me, I'll probably not want to draw 'em veddy muchly. :P Sorry!
(In other words, try to hit me with your best, most well-developed/interesting OC. I can handle it.)

Oh, what? Samples? Well, if you'll click the username under the pretty blinking poodle, and proceed to scrrrroll down to the character list, you'll find some things--the icons of Cathy, Lucas, Ezekiel, and Coral, for example. G'day and g'night, ttfn, love ya. <3

Note: Requests may or may not actually be watercolored. Probably will, but I won't guarantee nothin'.
Also, scanning feels like a chore, so it can take up to a few days to get a picture uploaded; but the more people request, the faster it'll be, because uploading in bunches is fun for me!
