Thousands march in Paris against austerity

PARIS (AP) ? Thousands of demonstrators marched peacefully Sunday in Paris to denounce austerity measures in Europe that have sparked violent protests in other EU countries struggling to avert fiscal crises.

The march, organized largely by the Left Front party and the Communists, comes before the French parliament's debate this week on a European fiscal treaty. Organizers put turnout at more than 80,000; Paris police declined to provide an estimate.

The protest exposed political pressures faced by President Francois Hollande ? whose popularity has been sinking in recent polls ? and notably from some ostensible allies of the left. It was the biggest demonstration of its kind since Hollande was elected in the spring, just weeks before his Socialists won control of the National Assembly.

The treaty would set up the European Stability Mechanism bailout fund that European leaders hope will help calm a debt crisis that threatens the eurozone and the global economy.

The main conservative opposition party and most Socialist lawmakers back the treaty. But it has splintered the French left: Far-left parties, the Greens and some dissident Socialists oppose it. The measure is nonetheless likely to pass in parliament because the two biggest parties generally favor it.

On Friday, the French government presented a budget that included high taxes on the wealthiest, but which critics say lacks fundamental reforms that could jumpstart economic growth.

Austerity has fanned recent violence in places like Spain and Greece.

PFT: Broncos not worried about Peyton's slow start

New York Giants v Carolina PanthersGetty Images

We accidentally started a new tradition last week.? To ensure that I would review the research compiled by the Football Night in America staff for the Sunday and Monday games, I decided to search for one interesting fact per game, to be shared.? With you.

Yes, I can pretend it?s about you.? But it?s about me.? (When isn?t it?)

So allow me to do something for you again, even though I?m really doing it for myself.

Panthers at Falcons:? In 19 regular-season games, Cam Newton already has 16 rushing touchdowns.? It?s the most by any NFL quarterback in his first two seasons, and Newton has 13 games left in his second season.

Patriots at Bills:? A week after leapfrogging boyhood idol Joe Montana, Tom Brady can pass Kerry Collins on the all-time passing list.? With 57 yards, Brady moves in to 11th place.

Vikings at Lions:? In his last three games against Detroit, Jared Allen has 6.5 sacks, a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown, and a forced fumble.? (The Vikings have lost each of those games, however.)

Titans at Texans:? In the 10-year rivalry between the team that used to be in Houston and the team that currently is in Houston, the team that used to be in Houston has won seven times.? In Houston.

Chargers at Chiefs:? With only 173 yards against the Falcons, Philip Rivers didn?t make it to 25,000 career passing yards.? With 27 against the Chiefs, Rivers will get there.

49ers at Jets:? With only 27 receiving yards last week, receiver Randy Moss quietly moved into fourth place on the all-time list, with 14,946.

Seahawks at Rams:? Greg Zuerlein leads all rookie kickers with eight field goals; he hasn?t missed one yet.

Dolphins at Cardinals:? Arizona has won 10 of its last 12 games (it?s the best 12-game record in the league), and seven in a row at home.

Bengals at Jaguars:? Blaine Gabbert has a passer rating of 122.0 in the fourth quarter this season, with a late go-ahead touchdown in Week One (Jacksonville would lose in overtime) and a game-winner in Week Three.

Raiders at Broncos:? Last week, Peyton Manning?s 300-plus passing yard game was his 64th, giving him one more than Dan Marino.

Saints at Packers:? In all four of his career games against Green Bay, Drew Brees has thrown for more than 300 yards and at least two touchdown passes.

Redskins at Buccaneers:? Washington running back Alfred Morris leads all rookies with 263 yards rushing, and Tampa?s Doug Martin is No. 2 with 214.

Giants at Eagles:? Martellus Bennett is the first Giants player to ever catch a touchdown pass in each of his first three games with the team.

Bears at Cowboys:? Jason Witten, plagued recently by a case of the dropsies, has caught nine or more passes in three of his last five Monday night appearances.

Luke Guthrie wins WNB Golf Classic

MIDLAND, Texas ?

Luke Guthrie rallied to win the WNB Golf Classic on Sunday for his second straight Web.com Tour title, holing a 12-foot par putt on the final hole for a 6-under 66 and a one-stroke victory.

Guthrie, the 22-year-old former University of Illinois player who turned professional this year after the NCAA tournament, had a 17-under 271 total at Midland Country Club.

Coming off a victory last week in the Boise Open, he earned $99,000 to jump from fourth to first on the money list with $382,463. The final top 25 on the list will earn 2013 PGA Tour cards.

Guthrie has six top-10 finishes in seven starts on the developmental tour, losing a playoff to Ben Kohles in Columbus, Ohio, and tying for third in Omaha, Neb. The two-time Big Ten champion also has earned $284,672 in three PGA Tour starts, all top-20 finishes. He tied for fifth in the John Deere Classic in July.

"I'm just trying to ride it out," said Guthrie, who plans to attend the Ryder Cup next weekend. "As a golfer you go through these runs where the hole gets bigger, your mind slows down and it seems easy. The trick in golf is have more days like this than the bad ones."

New Zealand's Danny Lee and Australia's Cameron Percy tied for second. Lee, the third-round leader, finished with a 72, and Percy shot a 70.

Playing in the third-to-last group, Guthrie saved par on the 470-yard finishing hole after his tee shot went through the fairway and settled among some trees that guard the left side.

"I probably should have pulled a 3-wood off the tee," he said. "And not hit driver."

Guthrie had 146 yards to hole and punched an 8-iron under the trees. The ball bounced in, then out of the front, greenside bunker and nestled in the rough. His pitch came up short, setting up the 12-footer.

"Biggest clutch putt as a professional," Guthrie said. "I misjudged the chip. Even if I hit it perfect it was going to wind up a good 5 feet short. There's a little ridge there and I had inside left edge. It wiggled a little bit right just before the hole, but snuck in the right side."

He's juggling golf with school, finishing up 13 credits for his business degree.

"I missed my flight home, so it looks like I'll miss class again tomorrow," Guthrie said. "I'm going to meet with the teacher and catch up on my homework but then head to Chicago for the weekend."

Class Creates Marketing Plan for Nonprofit | Minnesota School of ...

The Marketing Strategies class at Minnesota School of Business-Shakopee prepared a comprehensive marketing plan for the Academy on Violence and Abuse (AVA).? Students met with the Executive Director, Karla Vaughan, four separate times during the quarter and worked hard to complete the plan by September 12th, so she could present it to the Board of Directors on the 14th in Philadelphia.

AVA is comprised of researchers, clinicians, and public health professionals who provide information to the health care profession about the impacts of violence and abuse on patient health.

The students acted as their marketing team and were guided by Ms. Vaughan as their CEO. Board members were extremely excited to be working with the students and were eager to have some actionable plans to enable them to increase memberships, sponsorships, and ultimately expand the knowledge base of this debilitating condition.? Ms. Vaughan said, ?The students did a great job helping AVA clarify who their target markets were and then created specific messages for each of those markets.?

Niels Andersen, instructor and adviser for the students, stated,? ?The advantage to students is that they had regular deadlines to complete certain actions and were required to update their CEO weekly with the status of the plan.? Ms. Vaughan provided guidance and was an important conduit to the thoughts and concerns of the Board of Directors of AVA.? The organization is real, the plan is real, and the result will be implemented both nationally and potentially internationally.?

Redbox app for Android update brings a new UI and better filtering, no Instant streaming yet

The official Redbox app for Android hasn't seen many changes since it was first introduced early last year, but that's changing with version 3.0. Now available in Google Play, it brings a new look that should make browsing a bit easier, plus enhanced filtering (you can sort Blu-ray discs by genre) and the ability to sort by date or alphabetical order. Finally, support for push notifications could mean unsubscribing to those weekly texts for coupon codes, and users report you can now input the coupon codes in the app while making reservations. We poked around but couldn't find any references to its Instant streaming service, so there's at least one thing to expect for the next update. Android powered kiosk renters can grab the app at the source link below.

RN Hckr: GTA 4 - Grand Theft Auto IV PC Game Full Version Free ...

Grand Theft Auto IV?is a sandbox-style action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar North and released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 video game consoles in Europe, North America and Oceania, on 29 April 2008, and in Japan on 30 October 2008. A Windows version of the game was released in North America on 2 December 2008 and in Europe on 3 December. It was made available on Steam on 4 January 2009. It is the sixth 3D game in the Grand Theft Auto series. Two episodic packs have since been released for the Xbox 360, the first entitled The Lost and Damned, released on 17 February 2009. The second is entitled The Ballad of Gay Tony, released on 29 October 2009. Both episodes were released for PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows on 13 April 2010[20] in North America and on 16 April 2010 in Europe. The game is set in a redesigned rendition of Liberty City, a fictional city based heavily on modern day New York City. It follows Niko Bellic, a war veteran from Serbia. He comes to the United States in search of the American Dream, but quickly becomes entangled in a world of gangs, crime, and corruption. Like other games in the series, GTA IV is composed of elements from driving games and third-person shooters, and features "open-world" gameplay that gives players more control over their playing experience. It is the first console game in the series to feature an online multiplayer mode.

As the first game of the critically acclaimed series to appear on seventh generation consoles, Grand Theft Auto IV was widely anticipated. A major commercial and critical success, it broke industry records with sales of around 3.7 million units on its first day of release and grossing more than $500 million in revenue in the first week, selling an estimated 6 million units worldwide. As of 9 June 2010, the game had sold over 17 million copies. It is the all-time highest-scoring game on three professional critic review-aggregating websites: TopTenReviews, GameRatio and GameTab. It is also the highest rated current-generation game on Metacritic and MobyGames.

Nokia Lumia 510 put under the regulatory limelight, hints low-cost Windows Phone 7.8 on the way

Nokia Lumia 510 put under the regulatory limelight, hints lowcost Windows Phone 78 for all

Here's a contradiction in action: a Nokia phone that goes down a model number, but up in features. That's what we'll see if regulatory screenings and leaks surrounding the unreleased Lumia 510 are any indication. China's TENAA, the FCC and Indonesia's DG PosTel have all taken a look at the device ahead of time and point to a short, squat design that won't have the budget chic of the Lumia 610. However, if Baidu tips are correct, the 510 may be an ever-so-slight upgrade to its higher-digit predecessor with a larger 4-inch screen and a likely fast track to Windows Phone 7.8. Just don't anticipate more than the existing 800MHz Snapdragon, 256MB of RAM and 5-megapixel camera -- or a US release, for that matter. The FCC has only tested the Lumia 510 against American GSM bands, which hints that its 3G support is meant for China, Indonesia and other countries where low-cost smartphones matter most.

Cancer Patient Dixon Smith Uses a Shotgun to Hold Off Home ...

Dixon Smith cancer patient shotgun home invaders

Dixon Smith, 63, said he used a shotgun to keep two alleged home invaders at bay on Thursday. (Image source: WOOD-TV)

A 63-year-old man with stage 4 lymphoma used a shotgun to hold off two intruders who broke into his home.

Dixon Smith of Laketon Township, Mich. told MLive.com he confronted the two men just before noon on Thursday after he heard them talking downstairs shortly after his wife left to go shopping. He grabbed the gun and waited as they made it up to the second floor.

?They made it almost to the top stair. I came out and told them to lay down,? Smith told MLive.

He made them lie still while he dialed 911 and waited for police to arrive ? ?kind of a long five to 10 minutes, though,? he said. He said he spent the time talking to the two men and warning them not to try anything, which they didn?t. He said they were both wearing backpacks.

?I really tried to be as forceful as possible,? said Smith, whose cancer is currently in remission. ?I didn?t want them to get me into a conversation. You can?t let them get too close to where they can grab the gun.?

According to WOOD-TV, Alex Andrew Dickerson, 26, and James Leon Polk, 27, were each charged with first-degree home invasion Friday.

Smith said he and his wife know Polk and have tried to help him over the years, even taking him on a trip to Florida when he was a teenager. Smith said he believes the man became a drug addict, and he and his wife suspect him of stealing other things from the home in the past, including cash and his cancer medication.

Smith said police believe the two picked the front door lock with a credit card and that they found a chair in the woods outside used for staking out the home.

?It?s not a fun experience,? Smith told WOOD. ?You don?t really know what?s really going on and it?s not, it?s not what you might think. It?s not like the movies, you know it?s pretty serious when you?re holding a gun on somebody.?

He continued, ?You don?t know if they?re gonna pull a gun out or try to take your gun away from you or get you in a corner when you?re forced to shoot them. And I was trying to keep that from happening.?

He told the station he?d prefer the two get rehab rather than harsh jail sentences.

?Something that would straighten him out,? he said. ?But what are you going to do??

Save Money on Christmas Decorations | Padoozles

Save money on Christmas decorations

Free image courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos.net

We all want to save money, but with Christmas around the corner, can we save money on Christmas decorations too?

Yet bet, and here are some ways to do that.

Buy Christmas decorations when they go on sale.

Artificial Christmas trees, ornaments, outdoor Christmas decorations, all the cool things that make your home look so pretty during the holidays go on sale during the first week in January. ?You probably won?t find many sales on holiday decor until after the new year since many people spread their holiday season over the course of that late December / early January time period, but you can always look! ?You can definitely find good deals in January though for sure.

Go natural.

God provides all kinds of Christmas decorations! ?Pine cones and evergreen branches make beautiful decorations for the season. ?Bare branches presented in a creative way with white lights or stands of popcorn throughout can be very ornamental as well. ?Nuts can fill out a clear jar or a candy dish. ?Catch?poinsettias on sale in the home improvement stores (those guys always order too many) and enjoy a colorful home.

The Nesting Place blog has a great page which will inspire you with ways to combine natural plants and items with household objects you may just have laying around your house. ?I love the pine branches lovingly?draped?through the breakfast room?chandelier!

The Nesting Place ? How to Decorate for Christmas Naturally

How to Make a Wreath with Berries

DIY Christmas Decorations

Save your money on purchasing elaborate decor and find Christmas crafts you can make for homemade Christmas decorations.

Have fun with the kids and work on easy kids crafts. ?Martha Stewart can get you started on that one here: ?http://www.marthastewart.com/275712/kids-christmas-crafts/@center/307034/christmas-workshop#/202519

Parenting Magazine also has some pretty cool AND easy Christmas decorations ideas you can do with your kids (or even do yourself if you are craft challenged like I am)! ?See here to see some of the easiest and cutest Christmas crafts for kids around! ??http://www.parenting.com/gallery/diy-crafts

It?s easy to find directions for homemade Christmas ornaments in and around the web as well, or find a great book on DIY projects at a local used bookstore or at the library.

* ?Purchase Christmas craft supplies online at home so you can spend a little more time comparing prices.

* ?Check Amazon.com for craft supplies and kits.

* Keep an eye on Pinterest for inexpensive projects you can do.

* ?Purchase in bulk with a group and share the savings. ?If you can organize a group crafting time with friends and their children, all the better!

* ?Find freebies. ?Craigslist, Freecycle, and even word of mouth are all sources of free craft material you can use for do it yourself projects. ?If you don?t see something listed, don?t feel bad about posting a request.

Shop the ads and use coupons for things to make and material to use.

Michaels Crafts has tons of coupons and specials. ?Here is their weekly ad page so you can stay updated on sales, weekly deals, and Michaels coupons: ?http://weeklyad.michaels.com/

Hobby Lobby coupons and sales are here: ?http://www.hobbylobby.com/weekly/weekly.cfm

JoAnn?s coupons are here: ?http://www.joann.com/coupon/

Save money at Christmas

Free image courtesy of FreeDigitalPhoto.net

Shop the sales and use coupons for holiday decor at stores and online too.

Coupons, sales, and online discounts can add to your savings. ?Also consider price matching if you know of a store that will offer you the same price as the same items at another store with a lower price.

?

Recycle!

Seek out and proudly display vintage household objects and vintage Christmas items from years past.

You may not always get the best deals on old or antique Christmas ornaments, but at the same time, sometimes you can. ?If you?re willing to look around and have a little time to do so, you may be able to find some great prices on some really outstanding holiday items.

Consider things like vintage Christmas cards or postcards, antique sleds or wagons, those old crafts you did when you were in school and your mom kept around for all these years.

If your object doesn?t quite have that holiday look, you can easily create one by adding a few bows, or string evergreen branches or popcorn garland around the item!

You can really have fun using old objects in new ways, and you will be able to save money by doing so.

Buy inexpensive Christmas decorations at discount and dollar stores.

Dollar Tree usually carries decorative wind socks and window decor and also sells loads of wreaths, silk poinsettia flowers,?tabletop Christmas trees, elf and Santa tea towels and pot holders, and cute ornaments. ?Dollar General and Family Dollar do as well.

By the way, I LOVE wind socks, don?t you? ?They are so whimsical and fun to watch! ?If you want to save money on your purchases and save money on electricity too, wind socks make wonderful outdoor Christmas decorations, and vinyl holiday window stickers on the front door, and even on all the windows throughout the house, are cheap holiday decorations that really add a sense of childhood excitement!

I saw a house featured in one of the upscale country life magazines that was decorated completely with items purchased from The Dollar Tree over the years, and the home was absolutely gorgeous.

Don?t let ANYONE tell you, especially yourself, that you can?t have a beautifully decorated home for the holidays using cheap Christmas decorations!

Shop thrift stores.

You can find beautiful trinkets, wind up Christmas scenes, and ceramic Christmas villages at thrift stores sometimes. ?Not every store will carry as much as others, but if you take the time to look and then the time to shine up some pretty little objects that need a new home, you can find yourself with some real nice gems to display in your home at just the fraction of the cost.

Go solar with outdoor Christmas lights.

Oh yes sir re, outdoor lighting has gone green!

Amazon sells solar Christmas lights. ?Target does as well. ?Even Walmart and Sam?s Club offer them on their websites. ?You?ll find solar powered Christmas lights on Ebay too. ?While these may be a little more expensive than regular outdoor lights sometimes, you can save on electricity costs, and if you?re a light fanatic like the person in this video, saving money on electric bills is worth considering.

You can save money in so many ways, and fortunately there are many easy ways to save money around the house during the holiday season. ?Saving money on Christmas decorations is one great way to enjoy this time of the year and free yourself to think about the more important things in life like your kids, your family, and about what that holiday time is really all about anyway.

Have a beautiful Christmas!

GOP focuses on monthly jobs report, but do voters?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The government's monthly jobs report has become Washington's most anticipated and studied economic indicator, pounced upon by politicians, economists and journalists for snap judgments as the presidential election nears. But in the real world, most everybody else just looks around and figures things out for themselves.

Is that steel plant closing? Are Ford or General Motors rehiring? How much are those groceries? What's a full tank of gas going to run me? How much is our house worth? How's that 401(k) doing? When will I find another job? Will our college-educated daughter ever find work and move out.

These are the kinds of questions economists and pollsters say are on people's minds more than government statistics.

"People are not looking at these government reports to decide how the economy is doing, or how well they or their neighbors are doing. They know from their own daily experience," Democratic pollster Mark Mellman said.

"The flow of economic news matters," but only to supplement what their own eyes tell them, Mellman added.

Given that the unemployment rate hasn't dipped below 8 percent since the first month of President Barack Obama's term, Republicans are seizing on the new jobs numbers that come out the first Friday of each month. The GOP is using the fresh figures to batter the president and revive the question famously asked by Ronald Reagan in 1980: "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?"

"We're going in the wrong direction," asserts GOP nominee Mitt Romney. "This president ... doesn't understand what it takes to make our economy work. I do."

The latest numbers show a jobless rate of 8.1 percent for August, with monthly job creation an anemic 96,000, not enough to even match the growth in working-age population. It's doubtful the picture will improve much by Election Day. No president since Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1930s has won re-election with an unemployment so high.

Unemployment for Roosevelt was then about 15 percent, but falling from around 25 percent. Momentum and direction do count for something.

The economy has lost a staggering 8.8 million jobs in the downturn and has clawed back only 4.1 million. Just two jobs reports remain before the Nov. 6 election ? on Oct. 5 and Nov. 2 ? and they could be crucial to the outcome.

"To the average person, the economy is a very personal thing," says White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer. He said people look at different factors.

But which ones?

"Jobs is still No. 1," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics. "It's at the top of everyone's list. People might not know the government jobs number that comes out each month, but they see it every day in their lives." A close second right now, Zandi says, are gasoline prices, with the national average grazing $4 a gallon. But otherwise, inflation is generally muted.

Dan Connaghan, 69, a retiree in Traverse City, Mich., who supports Romney, agrees. "Unemployment figures don't have an effect on my vote." He questions their accuracy. But he also says there's one thing he knows for sure: "We're worse off than we were four years ago. No doubt about it."

Pollster Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center, said the government numbers "give people a basis of confirmation of their own sense about the economic issues that are the most important to them. And right now, it's jobs."

Only 10 percent of the people in a recent Pew survey consider today's economic conditions "excellent" or "good," Kohut said.

To homeowners, the value of their house ranks high. With nearly half the nation's adult population owning stocks and other securities, mostly through 401(k) and similar programs at work or in pension funds, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is paid some heed.

At its Friday close, the Dow marked its highest level since December 2007, the first month of the recession.

Other reports are more ominous.

The government reported this past week that the income of the typical American household has fallen to levels last seen in 1995.

Interest rates are also followed by many. When they're low, as now, it means individuals and businesses with good credit can borrow money at exceptionally low rates.

But there is a down side. For savers and seniors on fixed-income, there are paltry payouts on balances often drawing interest of 1 percent or less. This only adds to anxiety, particularly among baby boomers and other older Americans, especially given the softness in housing prices.

Jabril Shaikh, 27, of Milwaukee, works at a temporary job in the legal department at a JPMorgan Chase bank. He considers himself underemployed and says he works with a lot of lawyers who are deeply in debt but are only temporary workers. "It's really sad and frustrating ... but this is all I can get right now, you know?"

Leaning toward Obama, he said the unemployment rate will be a factor in his vote for president. But he's also taking into account other social issues.

Jonathan Ketcham, an Arizona State University associate professor who studies the link between local and state economies and presidential elections, said that, contrary to what many political operatives believe, voters are actually more influenced in their presidential decision by the national economy than by state or local conditions.

"We found that, going back to 1932, a state's unemployment rate had no ability to predict voting for president," he said. Furthermore, he said, despite the GOP four-year "are you better off" question, "we found that most people only pay attention to the most recent year, not to the past four years."

He said he views this as evidence that "people are rightly holding presidents accountable for the performance of the national economy." If true, that could be an important factor in this year's swing states that will likely determine the election outcome.

They're nearly evenly divided between states with jobless rates lower than the 8.1 percent national average, such as Ohio, Iowa, Virginia, New Hampshire and Wisconsin, and battleground states with higher rates such as Florida, Colorado, Michigan, North Carolina and Nevada.

Heading into the home stretch, Obama leads Romney in Florida, Ohio and Virginia, according to new post Labor-Day NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls.

"I think that in general, Obama's whole economic plan isn't working. Obviously people have been unemployed for a long time," said Rob Sheehy, 41, of Saukville, Wis., an information technology consultant who generally votes Republican. "I definitely do think it's time for a change and we need to try something else."

NFL 2012

Tom Brady Tom Brady points to a blocking assignment in the Patriots' season open against the Tennessee Titans.

We saw lots of scoring in Week 1?791 points in all, the most for any first week ever and the second-most for any week. It's tempting to attribute the scoring explosion to the replacement refs?Mario Williams?certainly wouldn't get in your way if you did?but it's more likely that the point totals are part of a much larger long-term trend, one that is having dramatic effects on how pro football is played.

The passing game has never been more explosive. It's now trite to say the NFL is a passing league and the sport is a quarterback's game, but it's never been more true. If I had to hang my hat on one simple football statistic as a measure of a team and its prospects for winning, it would be yards per pass attempt (YPA). No other stat correlates so well with a team's fortunes. YPA has been on the climb for decades, ever since the rule changes of 1978. In the last few years, it has accelerated its climb. Last season YPA was the highest ever for the NFL at 6.7. This past weekend it was over 6.9 despite the influx of rookie passers.

The other big development in the sport is field goal kicking. Kicks have become longer and more accurate. In 1974,?league field goal percentage was 60.6 percent. These days?that percentage is in the mid-80s. And even that doesn't tell the whole story. In 1974, 36 percent of all field attempts were from 40 yards or beyond. Now that figure is typically well over 40 percent. Offenses have slowly adapted to the rules over time, blindly feeling their way forward through trial and error, clinging a little too tightly to the myth that establishing the run is critical to success. Both sacks and interceptions have trended downward in the same period, making passing more lucrative and less risky at the same time. In comparison, rushing yards per attempt has barely budged, hovering around 4.1 yards per carry.

The numbers aren't just trivia. These trends have had a big effect on strategy, incentivizing a different kind of play-calling than what football fans might be used to. First, we're seeing more passing and less running. That only makes sense. But there are deeper implications, too. The easier it is for offenses to move down the field to score a touchdown or make what has become a nearly automatic field goal, the less important field position becomes and the more important possession becomes.

Punts don't make as much sense as they used to. When a team punts, it is essentially trading away a chance to keep possession in return for a field-position advantage. But when it takes Drew Brees or Tom Brady only two passes to make up that 30 or 40 yards of field position bought by a punt, you have to ask, "Why bother?"

Additionally, these developments change the strategy equation in the end game. When offenses are in what they call the four-minute drill, trying to run out the clock with a single-score lead, they can no longer count on a run-only strategy. We used to talk about the two-minute drill, in which heroic quarterbacks lead their teams on a winning march down the field. Now, two minutes sounds like a quaint eternity. Offenses need only seconds to steal a win. In?the Jaguars-Vikings game on Sunday, the teams needed only 1:18 to manufacture not one but two full, lead-changing drives totaling 10 plays and 11 points.

What this means is that running the clock down to under one minute with a few runs and then punting is no longer a winning strategy. The teams that win will be the aggressive ones that pass the ball where a more conservative team might be content to run and chew clock. Rookie Robert Griffin III had a great first game, but his biggest play was not?the 88-yard touchdown pass?to Pierre Garcon. It was a 22-yard pass on second-and-13 from his own 17 with 2:22 left to play. It gave the Redskins a new set of downs and kept on the sideline a New Orleans offense that had just ripped off touchdown drives in 1:04 and 0:53. That single first-down conversion was the equivalent of a triple play with the bases loaded in the ninth inning. By the time Saints got the ball back, Drew Brees had only 22 seconds to work with.

The game continues to change, and the teams that adapt will be the ones that win.

Egypt embassy protests: Will Mitt Romney's comments matter in November?

Gaffes spoken in haste on the campaign trail can fade. But an inaccurate statement, geared for political advantage at a time of national crisis could have a longer impact on the presidential race.

Will Mitt Romney?s comments on the Middle East matter to voters when they go to the polls on Nov. 6? That?s a question roiling the US political world in the wake of the tragic killing of the US ambassador to Libya and continued riots outside American embassies in the region.

Democrats say that Mr. Romney has hurt himself with hasty and inaccurate remarks about a situation he doesn?t appear to understand. Republicans reply that their standard-bearer is forcefully highlighting the fecklessness of President Obama?s foreign policy.

Our view is this: This uproar probably won?t make any more difference in the end than previous media obsessions over shiny baubles such as Romney?s (nonpublic) tax returns. Except ... foreign policy is a serious matter. In that sense, the electoral outcome of this incident is less predictable than that of purely domestic flaps.

As the estimable University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato notes, it?s still seven weeks until Nov. 6, which is plenty of time for this to disappear completely from voters? minds. But what if the crisis deepens? On Thursday, riots spread to Yemen. In that context, it is possible that a rally-around-the-flag effect will help Mr. Obama. It is also possible that the situation will appear to spin out of the incumbent?s control, giving an advantage to Romney.

?Int?l chaos favors incumbent POTUS short term,? tweeted Mr. Sabato on Thursday morning. ?Yet events can spin in many different directions. Best bet: Unsettled calm, campaign moves on.?

To recap, on the evening of Sept. 11, Romney issued a statement condemning what he characterized as the Obama administration?s ?sympathy? for the rioters storming the walls of the embassy in Cairo. He based this on a tweet from the embassy itself ? sent prior to the breach of security ? that reaffirmed US support for religious tolerance in light of the crude anti-Muslim film that had inflamed the mob.

The embassy tweet had not been cleared by the White House. Minutes before Romney?s statement, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton issued her own release condemning the violence and saying there was no justification for the Middle East attacks.

Subsequent events showed the situation in Libya in particular was more serious than it first appeared. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans died in an assault that US officials now suspect was planned by organized, armed militants, and perhaps by Al Qaeda itself.

Then at a press conference on the morning of Sept. 12, GOP nominee Romney doubled down on his critique.
