Iran, Egypt leaders discuss Syria conflict, ties

Presidents Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran and Egypt's Mohamed Morsi on Thursday discussed the Syrian conflict and their states' severed diplomatic ties in their first-ever meeting, an official said.

"They emphasised the need to solve the Syria crisis via diplomacy and to prevent foreign intervention," Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian told Iran's Arabic-language broadcaster Al-Alam.

"They also discussed ways to boost the level of Tehran-Cairo relations," he said.

The meeting took place in Tehran on the sidelines of a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) at which Egypt handed over the organisation's rotating presidency to Iran.

Morsi's attendance was the first time a head of state from Egypt had set foot in Iran since the two countries broke off diplomatic ties in the wake of Tehran's 1979 Islamic revolution.

Ahmadinejad issued a statement afterwards saying he and Morsi had agreed each other's country was a "strategic partner" in the region, but there was no word about restoring diplomatic relations.

On Syria, Ahmadinejad said the killing should stop and elections be organised, and that "NATO and the oppressive countries" should be prevented from intervening in Syria.

Morsi was quoted in the statement as saying the "problems" in Syria could only be resolved "with the help of influential countries in the region like Iran."

Earlier on Thursday, in a speech to the NAM summit, the new Egyptian president denounced the "oppressive regime" in Damascus, which he said had lost all legitimacy.

That comment prompted the Syrian delegation at the summit to walk out, and embarrassed Iran which fully supports Damascus.

Iran has been reaching out to Morsi since June when he became Egypt's first civilian president.

Morsi hails from Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and says he is seeking broader relationships in the Middle East, including with Tehran. But he has so far reacted with caution to Iran's overtures.

Iranian media reported that Morsi left Tehran shortly after the meeting. His office had said before the summit that his stay would last a few hours, only long enough to hand over the NAM presidency.

State media reported supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as rejecting "all foreign intervention in Syria," and saying "the only way to solve the Syrian question is to stop sending weapons to irresponsible groups" in the country.

Tehran accuses certain Western states plus Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of supplying the Syrian rebels with arms.

Robert Henry Graham, art professor emeritus looks over one of his War Series paintings in the Perspective Gallery in Squires Student Center. Matt Gentry | The Roanoke Times

BLACKSBURG ? Artist Robert Henry Graham has touched the lives of hundreds of students during his time as a professor at Virginia Tech?s School of Visual Arts. Now he hopes to inspire the general public with his own artwork.

Graham will showcase paintings from the past 30 years in his August exhibit at Tech titled ?Robert Henry Graham: A 30-Year Retrospective.?

Graham spent more than eight hours looking through hundreds of paintings with Perspective Gallery curator Robin Boucher to decide which to show. They settled on paintings that represent three main series: a ?psycho-sexual? series painted during the early 1980s; a series titled ?Chicago Memories and Fantasies? that commemorates Graham?s childhood; and a series titled ?WAR,? which focuses mainly on the brutality of Serbian wars in the early 1990s as well as the 1992 race riots in Los Angeles.

Graham first began painting on canvas. He was working in San Francisco as a community worker in the 1960s when he became involved with the BlackMan art gallery. An artist he met there, Robin Leigh, pushed him to try painting.

?I taught myself, then went back to school for my degrees,? he said.

Graham received his bachelor?s degree in studio art from California State University ? Hayward in 1980, and a master?s degree in fine arts from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1983. That year, he moved to Blacksburg and began teaching at Tech.

Graham, now a professor emeritus at Tech, has taught drawing classes in the School of Visual Arts at Tech, though his main medium is oil paint on paper.

?For me, drawing is the foundation for teaching painting or anything really,? he said.

Graham said he has enjoyed working with students and watching them grow and develop their techniques. At the same time, he has developed and changed his own technique.

Graham?s technique of layering paint in his images is distinct. It can sometimes take two or three years to finish a painting. He begins by lining the walls of his studio with almost 20 layers of markers and Cray-Pas to create initial shapes. He then applies as many as 120 layers of oil paints to the paper.

He said some kinds of paints take as long as six months to dry because of how thickly he applies them.

?I have to work on a lot of paintings at the same time,? he said.

Boucher said she enjoyed getting to know Graham and his techniques.

?To me, it was fascinating,? she said. ?He starts with one big idea and has to go through the layers to find individual ideas.?

Graham said he lets the composition of the marker layer tell him what the ultimate painting will be.

?I love color and texture,? he said. ?I love playing with the image, pushing the image and seeing how many rules I can break and still make it work.?

The first series of paintings on display in the Perspective Gallery aren?t quite as layered as his newer works. These works, which he characterized as ?psycho-sexual,? are done on canvas, not paper, and have only 20 or so layers in them. They?re more abstract than his ?Chicago? and ?WAR? series.

The older paintings were created before he began teaching, during his time as an undergraduate and a grad student.

?A lot of my pre-teaching works are more from my imagination,? Graham said. ?I became more realistic after I started teaching.?

?My painting generated teaching, and my teaching generated painting,? he said.

?Chicago Memories and Fantasies? shows the beginning of Graham?s penchant for using many layers of colorful paints in his work. His now-signature layering technique began somewhat by accident.

?I got tired of canvas, so I was experimenting with using layers on paper,? he said. ?One time, I put down a layer, and I had to run to a meeting.?

He thought he?d run back and finish the painting right after the meeting, but it was a couple of days before he was able to get back to it. It had dried, and the new paint didn?t blend with the previous layer.

Graham decided to experiment with this new way of layering paint to create more texture. He?s been perfecting the technique since.
?Chicago Memories and Fantasies? reminisces on areas of the city where he grew up that are now not as nice as they used to be.

Graham features vistas of the city skyline as well as more realistic images of his childhood apartment, the apartment he lived in as a young man and a young mother pushing her baby stroller along the street.

While Boucher was helping him select pieces for the show, he told her many stories and memories related to the images. She decided to write some of them down and incorporate them into the show.

?He grew up black and in Catholic school in Chicago in the ?40s and ?50s,? Boucher said. ?I felt that his stories were important.?

The final series featured, ?WAR,? still isn?t done. Graham said he thinks he might have at least another 50 paintings to do from the series. It uses a combination of abstract images and silhouettes incorporated into colorful, textured backgrounds.

The more abstract paintings are meant to be more ambiguous, Graham said.

He used color and texture to evoke emotions, like showing a mainly earth-toned abstract background splashed with red, called ?Blood in the Night on the Killing Floor.?

That one, he said, is ?just about where people are trying to kill each other.?

In some of his other paintings, Graham used silhouettes from photographs as the paintings? basis. He mainly drew from photographs taken during the 1992 race riots in Los Angeles and on the various wars happening in Serbia during the early ?90s.
Graham also incorporates an ?x? symbol into several of his war paintings.

?I?ve always liked Malcolm X, so it?s kind of a tribute to him,? he said. ?Then I was raised a Catholic, and the ?x? is used in Catholic iconography. The Romans used it to symbolize the cross in crucifixion.?

The show tries to summarize Graham?s changes in style and different social causes he?s invested his interest in over the past 30 years.
The pieces are also all available for purchase.

Boucher said it?s the most expensive show she?s hung since she became the gallery?s curator in 2007. Paintings are listed between $1,100 and $10,000.

?All I can do is put down what I feel and see, and if it communicates to people and if they get what I?m trying to say, that?s great,? he said. ?It?s up to them to pull it out.?

Graham?s show will be hanging in the Perspective Gallery in Squires Student Center until Sept. 29.

The opening reception is Friday night from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Graham also will be discussing his exhibit with several classes at Tech in September.

Boeing's Dreamliner Lands in Africa - Carry On | Travel + Leisure

This month, Ethiopian Air became the first airline outside of Asia to operate Boeing?s newest airplane: the 787 Dreamliner. The buzz-worthy aircraft has been making headlines for its advancements in technology and enhanced in-flight experience. Some of the new in-plane elements include larger windows, LED lighting and better cabin pressure that mimics an altitude closer to sea level. The true eye-catching feature for airline companies, however, is the plane?s lightweight and extreme fuel efficacy; something Ethiopian Air is excited about. Snag one of their first flights when they begin flying the plane on routes throughout Africa, including Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Their next step: flying an international route to Washington D.C. And, after that, the possibilities are endless.

German Court Allows Bundeswehr to be Deployed in Domestic Military Operations

Germany?s highest court issued a ruling on August 18 allowing the military to be used against threat within the country. This ruling breaks a 67-year-old taboo against using the Bundeswehr within Germany?s borders.

Just before and during World War ii, Adolf Hitler used the SS paramilitary units against the German population to keep his hold on power. In an attempt to stop a repeat of such power abuse, the post-war German government restricted the role of the military to warding off foreign assaults. Troops were explicitly forbidden to be deployed within the country.

The rising threat of terrorist is what prompted the Federal Constitutional Court to reverse this ruling. Bundeswehr troops can now be deployed inside of Germany to counter ?states of emergency of catastrophic proportions.? The military is still prohibited from being used ?in reaction to the threat posed by demonstrating crowds.?

While the breaking of this taboo does not exactly give the German government dictatorial powers as some are claiming, it does show that the German government officials are becoming more comfortable with the use of military power.

As the eurocrisis intensifies and domestic unrest increases across Europe, expect Germany to rise up as the dominant economic and military power in Europe. ?

Obama?s campaign pitches top five Romney ?falsehoods?

Just before 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, President Barack Obama?s campaign released a list of the ?Top Five Falsehoods? that might lead Americans astray and cause them to vote for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

The first item on the list is Obama?s revealing July charge to business owners and?entrepreneurs?that ?you didn?t build that.?

Another three of five ?falsehoods? are Romney?s criticisms of Obama?s unpopular health care takeover, Obama?s July 12 welfare-to-work relaxation and Obamacare?s $719 billion cut to Medicare spending.

The fifth item is ?birtherism,? according to the campaign email, which alleged that ?Romney actually enlisted himself in this birther movement last week.?

Republicans will ?be using their primetime coverage this week to launch their same old attacks,? read the e-mail from Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter. ?This will be the first time many folks are tuning into the election this year ? so we need to double down on our efforts to fight back?. [and] we put together the top five falsehoods to look out for this week.?

?Take a peek, and don?t be shy about passing them on,? she urged Obama campaign supporters.

The list suggests that Romney?s messages are worrying the Obama campaign.

Obama?s July 13 ?you didn?t build that? line is a frequent centerpiece in speeches by Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, as well as in the ads they?re running in swing states.?But ?Romney took the president?s words out of context in an attempt to imply that the president was somehow insulting small business owners ? rather than advocating for investments that help them succeed,? read Cutter?s e-mail.

Cutter?s message didn?t actually quote the president?s statement, which has reportedly damaged the president?s support among American?entrepreneurs.

In his impromptu statement, Obama told his Roanoke, Virginia audience, ?[L]ook, if you?ve been successful, you didn?t get there on your own.? You didn?t get there on your own.? I?m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart.? There are a lot of smart people out there.? It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.? Let me tell you something ? there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.?If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.? There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.? Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.? Somebody invested in roads and bridges.??If you?ve got a business ? you didn?t build that.? Somebody else made that happen.?

The second item on Cutter?s list is Medicare, where Obama?s expected advantage has withered because of his decision to fund Obamacare with $719 billion in unpopular Medicare cuts.?Those cuts have allowed Romney and Ryan to woo retirees? votes with a promise to reverse the deep cuts in Medicare-related spending.

Cutter?s e-mail doesn?t mention the $719 billion cut, but instead charges that Romney is making a ?categorically false attack? before changing the subject to Romney?s long-term Medicare reform proposals.

Romney ?wants to turn Medicare into a voucher system? [and] would force new retirees to pay more out of pocket for services,? read the email.

The No. 3 item on the warning list is Romney?s argument that the popular 1996 uniform welfare-to-work rules are being gutted by a recent decision to allow states to design their own looser welfare-to-work rules. To push the point in swing states, Romney is also heavily funding televised attack ads on the issue. (Kaus Files: The case for Romney?s welfare attack)

?President Obama is a strong supporter of welfare-to-work programs and recently gave states flexibility to help move more people from assistance to employment as quickly as possible ? a policy that many Republican governors, including Romney himself, have requested,? read Cutter?s email.

The No. 4 item is Obamacare.

Many polls show a majority of the public is either hostile or suspicious of the far-reaching effort to give the federal government centralized control over health care practices and spending.?But Obamacare really protects the private sector health system while making sure ?insurance companies play by the rules,? read the Cutter e-mail.

?Romney has launched a myriad of false statements and distortions about the health care law? [but] Obamacare improves the private health care system, strengthens the insurance plan you currently have, reduces the deficit, and offers the largest middle-class tax cut for health care in history,? according to the e-mail.

The fifth ?falsehood,? Cutter charges, is ?birtherism.?

The email?s focus on Obama?s birthplace is likely intended to sway non-ideological voters away from Romney.?Cutter highlighted the issue, and used a recent Romney joke about his familiarity to Michigan voters to argue that Romney was spreading false rumors.

?Conspiracy theorists and members of the Republican Party continue to push this false and dangerous attack? [and] Romney actually enlisted himself in this birther movement last week: ?No one?s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised,? he said.?

Since 2008, Obama and his allies have repeatedly highlighted the rumors about his birthplace to stigmatize critics. His online store, for example, sells several items carrying images of his birth certificate. The first three items on display at the online store cite the rumors, including the pitch for the first item, which is a ?Made in The USA Mug.?

?There?s really no way to make the conspiracy about President Obama?s birth certificate completely go away, so we might as well laugh at it ? and make sure as many people as possible are in on the joke,? reads the pitch.

(AP) ? Belgium's highest court granted conditional early release Tuesday to one of the nation's most despised criminals, the accomplice and former wife of a pedophile and child killer, even though she let two of his victims starve to death.

The Court of Cassation ruled that no procedural errors were made by a lower court, which is allowing Michelle Martin to live in a convent after serving barely half her 30-year sentence for her part in the mid-1990s kidnappings, rapes and killings by her then-husband, Marc Dutroux.

"The court rejects the appeals," Judge Albert Fettweis said of motions by the prosecutor's office and some families of the victims.

It was unclear when Martin would leave the prison but security forces were already preparing for her arrival in Malonne, a verdant village in the hills 75 kilometers (45 miles) south of the capital, Brussels. There she will live in a Clarisse convent and, in the words of her lawyer, seek atonement for her crimes.

"There is only one word for this. This is simply absurd. But I will have to accept it," said Paul Marchal, whose daughter An was one of the victims of Dutroux. "Concerning Martin, my fight is over and done. I lost."

The lawyer for Jean-Denis Lejeune, whose 8-year-old daughter Julie was one of the girls who starved to death, said the families would work to change the law and make sure victims get a bigger say.

"We will first have to ask the politicians to change the law and, secondly, we will have to go to Strasbourg," where the European Court of Human Rights can still have an impact, said lawyer Georges-Henri Beauthier.

That process could take years, however.

In the meantime, several policemen were stationed near the convent even before the verdict was announced and fluorescent graffiti near the convent protesting Martin's arrival was removed. At a religious statue near the gate, teddy bears sat next to a picture of the two eight-year-old girls who starved to death in Dutroux's dungeon in 1996.

"Shame on the sisters," one poster said, referring to the nuns who were willing to take Martin in.

Martin has depicted herself as a passive culprit of the psychopath Dutroux. But she is still blamed for aiding her husband as he went on a depraved and murderous spree, and she is particularly loathed for letting the two girls starve while Dutroux was imprisoned.

Dutroux, an unemployed electrician and convicted pedophile on parole at the time of the crimes, was arrested in 1996 and convicted eight years later of abducting, imprisoning and raping six girls between the summers of 1995 and 1996. He was also found guilty of murdering two of the six girls, who ranged in age from 8 to 19 years old.

The last two of Dutroux's kidnap victims came out alive after police took action.

Martin's lawyer, Thierry Moreau, insisted his client deserved a shot at a better life.

"There is something human remaining in Mrs. Martin, even though she acknowledges herself she is responsible for very serious acts," Moreau said. "She paid the price for it. She did it in respect of the law, and now there is this project where she wants to redeem herself and this will be another way to do her sentence."

The prospect of Martin's release had spawned demonstrations over the past weeks, with demands to keep her in jail.

Will the Bankruptcy Trustee Take Your Tax Refund? ? Charleston ...

Guest Post by By Victoria Maydanik, consumer bankruptcy attorney in San Jose, California and owner of Maydanik Law Firm.

Each year during tax season, hundreds of people lose some or all of their tax refund in bankruptcy court.? After the first of each year, here is a fairly typical discourse between the bankruptcy trustee and the person who filed the bankruptcy petition, also known as the debtor:

Trustee: Have you already filed your taxes for last year?

Debtor: ? Yes, I filed taxes a week ago.

Trustee:? Will you be getting a refund?

Debtor: Yes.

Trustee: How much?

Debtor: $4,000.

Trustee (nonchalantly): Based on your schedules, you can still exempt $1,000. The other $3,000

is not exempt. Write a check payable to me for the $3,000, or send your payment to

the address on this card.? Any creditors present? No creditors are present.? This

concludes the meeting.? Good bye.

What has just happened? In essence, the debtor was told he had to pay $3,000 to creditors and the trustee to make sure that his bankruptcy case completed successfully.

Is this something the debtor expected? Probably not.

Did it have to happen? Probably not.

Let?s rewind. The bankruptcy trustee was asking the debtor if he was expecting a refund because the trustee wanted to figure out if the debtor had any additional money coming his way.? This matters because case, all of your property becomes property of the bankruptcy estate and can be distributed or sold to creditors unless you can exempt it. If you have already used up all available exemptions, then any new property or funds that you acquire during the case would be channeled to creditors. If you still have some exemptions left, then you may be able to exempt part of the extra funds, and would have to part with whatever is not exempt, just like in the example above.

If this debtor delayed filing taxes, for example by getting an extension until October, this would not have helped, because he is still entitled to claim the refund during his case. If someone has a right or an expectation of receiving any funds or property, it usually counts the same way in the bankruptcy case as if he already had the funds in his pocket. An easy illustration of this concept is a winning lottery ticket for $5,000 that has not been cashed yet.? Although the debtor does not have the $5,000 yet, he has a definite right to receive $5,000, which is the same from the trustee?s point of view.

If the debtor had no idea how large his refund would be, the trustee would wait.? And wait. ?And wait. It doesn?t help to delay the resolution of the question, because the longer the case stays open, the more issues can brew up. The trustees can wait a long time ? in some extreme cases, more than 10 years ? if there is an unresolved question as to how much the debtor is entitled to receive.? If there are unfiled taxes, the trustee would expect them to be filed, and any non-exempt refunds to be given to the trustee before the case is completed.

If the debtor gets tired of waiting for the discharge of his debts and decides to walk out of the Chapter 7 case?well, he may not necessarily be able to do it.? Although the debtor can ask the court to dismiss the case, the right to leave the case is not automatic or absolute. If the trustee thinks there could be some significant funds that could be distributed to her and the creditors, the trustee will likely oppose debtor?s request to close the case.

If the debtor is not in a Chapter 7, but is instead in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy with a payment plan, then any non-exempt funds received before the payment plan is confirmed might? increase the amount of the monthly Chapter 13 payment.

Last but not the least, the debtor in our example probably could have easily avoided both the surprise and the loss of the funds. Unless there was some emergency that necessitated the rushed filing of the case, he should have filed all his taxes before filing bankruptcy, then received and spent the refund. If he had some legitimate expenses such as insurance, mortgage, medical treatments, groceries, or car maintenance that the refund could be used for, these expense should have been paid before the case was filed.

The same holds true for any other uncertain asset or recovery. For example, if somebody defrauded you or injured you, and you have a right to file a claim or lawsuit against them, you may want to get that claim resolved before your bankruptcy case. Your local bankruptcy attorney should advise you on available bankruptcy exemptions that you can use.

Don?t put off the resolution of uncertainties, and you will minimize the risk of delays in your bankruptcy case, surprise requests by the trustee, and unnecessary loss of funds and property.

Terra Forming Terra: Former Model Defeats Breast Cancer with Diet

?We continue to get more individual reports supporting the efficiency of imposing an alkaline regimen in order to defeat cancer. A recent posting of mine revealed a direct approach using maple sugar and baking soda to force the issue. The indirect approach is typically vegan.

This is the first such report that begins with a person who does not start with any conventional treatment at all. It turns out to be highly successful and the patient was obviously aggressive in maxing out the vitamin C. That may not have been necessary, yet it will certainly be beneficial.

What is becoming clearer, is that going alkaline is the first priority with a cancer diagnosis. It will not harm you and will certainly work against the cancer supporting all other therapies.

55-year-old former model battles breast cancer with diet changes; refuses chemo and surgery

Thursday, August 16, 2012 by: Jonathan Benson, staff writer

(NaturalNews) The story of former model Jessica Richards' battle with cancer is a remarkable one, especially because it has defected from the use of conventional treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. In her book? The Topic of Cancer, Richards explains how following a strict metabolic diet and receiving high-dose intravenous injections of vitamin C has helped successfully reverse the progression of her breast cancer, to the shock of many conventional doctors.

It is a story you will likely never hear from the mainstream media, at least not from the perspective of being taken seriously, and yet it is one that people desperately need to hear. Rather than follow in the footsteps of the millions of others who have lost their lives as a result of all the cutting, burning, and poisoning, Richards made the personal, informed decision to naturally fight breast cancer by feeding her body a plethora of cancer-fighting nutrients, and cutting out a host of cancer-causing foods and substances.

After learning that she had an unusually large tumor in one of her breasts, Richards was told by her doctors that she would need to begin an aggressive treatment protocol that involved removing the breast, having it reconstructed, and undergoing an intense series of radiation and hormone treatments to keep it at bay. Knowing a bit about the toll this would take on her body, Richards decided to take a different route.

"The cancer consultant who'd done my ultrasound scans said my tumor was so large I'd need accelerated chemotherapy for several months," writes Richards about her initial diagnosis. "He said I would almost certainly need a mastectomy or at least a large lumpectomy with significant reconstruction, my lymph nodes removed, radiotherapy and five years of hormone-altering drugs after that."

After researching alternative options, Richards decided to eliminate all dairy and sugar from her?diet, including most fruits, and instead eat lots of vegetables and take high doses of vitamin C intravenously. After just three weeks of starting this regimen, which many said she was crazy to undertake at the expense of conventional treatments, scans showed that Richards' tumor had essentially "gone to sleep," and was in the process of regressing. Almost immediately after beginning the protocol, in fact, Richards began to see drastic improvements.

"I switched from a generally healthy diet to a metabolic one, focusing on alkaline over acid foods and cutting out all sugars," adds Richards. "I also cut out all grains and most fruit, which are broken down into sugars. Instead, I concentrated on leafy green vegetables, short grain rice, quinoa and linseeds, and cut out all dairy, which is pumped with artificial hormones. I also had regular high-dose infusions of vitamin C, a natural form of chemotherapy."

With the help of alternative?cancer?specialists, Richards has all but completely cured her cancer

After several months of adhering to her strict diet, which she admits has not always been easy, Richards was told by her consultant radiologist that her tumor was effectively breaking down in the same way as it would with intensive chemotherapy, except without all the organ damage and other deadly side effects. A little over a year after first being diagnosed with cancer, Richards was able to stop her intravenous vitamin C injections -- and not long after that was told that she was completely healthy, and would not have to return for a checkup for another year.

Today, Richards is healthier than ever, and has never once had to be blasted with radiation, poisoned with chemicals, or had a knife cut her skin.

While we often read stories from cancer survivors who have chosen the conventional route, those who have taken the natural path are so rarely given a voice.

But hearing from others who have taken the road less traveled and come out the other side can be just as important as any dietary change or treatment plan.

In the last few months I?ve received a steady stream of emails from people telling me about their own alternative cancer journeys. These stories have filled Mum and I with hope and joy and so we thought we?d share with you some of these uplifting tales.

Jessica Richards, 5-year breast cancer survivor

In May 2007, I was diagnosed with a 3.5cm Stage two invasive, ductal carcinoma (a large breast cancer), and was recommended a partial or full mastectomy and removal of lymph nodes, intensive chemo, radiotherapy and five years of drugs. Nearly five years on I?m extremely fit and well having had no medical treatment whatsoever.

I held off deciding on any particular treatment until I?d had a full diagnosis and seen the results of my tumour biopsy and lymph node biopsy. I then investigated each treatment I had been prescribed and the first thing I decided against was chemotherapy. I gradually became aware that what I was being offered was not necessarily my best option when weighed up against the risks from ?side? effects and the negligible benefits.

Ultimately my choice was a simple one:

A. If I?m going to live, could I face life with the long-term side effects of chemo and radiation, which would have impaired my health and wellbeing in the long term? The answer to that was, No.

B. If I?m going to die anyway, do I want to spend the last year or so of my life in and out of hospital wishing I were dead? The answer to that was again, No.

The alternative route seemed to offer me the best chance of recovery with no damaging side effects. I would like to make it very clear that I did not base any of my choices on belief. I simply made rational decisions based on the facts and evidence presented to me, in that I did everything I could to support my immune system (rather than destroy it) and at the same time, wreck the cancer environment within my body.

When family and friends eventually found out about my decision their reactions ranged from, ?Wow you?re bold!? to, ?What!?!?

I would like to add here that I did everything under medical supervision. I have friends and colleagues in Harley Street where I?ve been based for 20 years and I found a very supportive consultant who agreed to monitor me. My?book?includes an interview with him and other members of my medical and health care team.

One of the most difficult aspects of choosing the alternative route was paying for all my treatments privately. I also had difficulty finding genuine clinics and practitioners from amongst the cranks and charlatans and those seeking to financially exploit cancer patients.

Many people assumed my situation wasn?t very serious because I didn?t lose my hair and wasn?t in and out of hospital. I found, as a result, that sometimes I wasn?t offered the same level of support as those taking the conventional route.?It seems that many people think hair-loss, sickness and general illness are caused by cancer rather than the treatments they?ve endured.

I have little doubt that?intravenous Vitamin C?(which I had with?Dr. Andre Young-Snell?in Brighton) was the most vital treatment to my recovery. In fact, when I had ultra sound scans at the time, the radiologist said that the tumour was breaking down in exactly the same way that a tumour breaks down with chemo.

There?s no question in my mind that mental attitude is everything in cancer recovery and I have dedicated a chapter of my book to a step-by-step guide on how to develop the attitude to enable you to recover. It?s not what life presents to us which defines who we are but who we choose to be in relationship to it.

The one piece of advice I would offer anyone facing a receiving a cancer diagnosis is, unless you?ve been told it is a medical emergency,?TAKE YOUR TIME. I believe this was the best decision I made at the beginning and, interestingly, this advice was echoed when I later interviewed my team members. When diagnosed with cancer, we are all in a serious situation but few are in an immediately urgent one. We need to get over the shock of the diagnosis before we can even begin to think about some of the very complex and critical decisions we have to make. Jessica Richards is a leadership development specialist and author of?The Topic of Cancer?which can be purchased from Amazon or from her website:?www.jessicarichards.co.uk

Crazy Eddie's Motie News: Science crime scenes 6: Accidental and ...

As I wrote yesterday, after skipping last week, it's time to post another installment of a continuing series. Today, it's science crime scenes.

I'm going to skip the usual archeology stories about atrocities from the past and modern day smuggling, looting, and vandalism. That's not because I don't have any; I have quite a lot of them from Overnight News Digest: Science Saturday (Curiosity's first destination edition) on Daily Kos that I'll post in another edition. Instead, I'm going to focus on stories about crimes against science, the planet, and society from other disciplines, including psychology, sociology, and technology, along with a dose of policy, all but one of which come from the public research universities of Arizona, where there will be a primary election this coming Tuesday, according to Politics1.com. It turns out that all of these stories either directly or indirectly comment on the GOP's science policies or the party's top candidates.

I begin with a story from Science Magazine that is about a potential crime against science itself, a law from the state of Todd Akin and one that bears the stamp of the religious wing of the Republican Party.

Missouri 'Right to Pray' Law Could Limit Teaching Evolution

Last week, Missouri voters gave themselves the right to pray without state interference. But some science educators are worried that the seemingly innocuous referendum on the 7 August ballot, which passed overwhelmingly, could also undermine the teaching of evolution in public schools.

Amendment 2 "is a lawyer's dream" because of its vagueness, says Joshua Rosenau, programs and policy director of the National Center for Science Education in Oakland, California, which tracks efforts by groups that oppose evolution. While the amendment begins by declaring that all residents "have a natural and indefeasible right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences," it also lists several situations in which that right must be protected. Rosenau is worried about one particular clause: "that no student shall be compelled to perform or participate in academic assignments or educational presentations that violate his or her religious beliefs."

Those words give students the legal right to skip assignments related to evolution if the subject matter conflicts with their beliefs, Rosenau says. And that exemption could extend throughout their scholastic career, he adds, since evolution is not just taught in one lesson but remains a recurrent theme throughout science education. The amendment also leaves a hole in their coursework, he says, as it provides no guidance on any substitute lessons.

Hat/tip to CharlesInCharge on Daily Kos, who included the above excerpt in You've Got to Show Me: The (New) Epistemological Crisis and commented about the law's greater significance.
We face a new epistemological crisis in this country. The crisis has been brewing for well over 50 years but, I would argue, since the advent of the internet has reached epidemic proportions. In an age where every URL is created equal and where precedence goes not to knowledge which is tested in the cauldron of the scientific method but rather by which spurious link comes up first in a Google search, how are we to evaluate statements and data to see whether they accurately represent truth or reality?

Thomas Kuhn, in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, argued that the history of science could be explained by anomalies in a prevailing paradigm reaching the point where a 'crisis' occurs, such that the existing paradigm must be overthrown and replaced by a new paradigm. Think Einstein replacing Newton or Darwin replacing the Biblical account of Creation. The point is that internal contradictions within an older established order reach such a fever pitch that the older order no longer suffices. That crisis now besets the very mechanisms by which our culture arbitrates what it calls knowledge. The epistemological crisis is now upon us and it is hard to forsee the new paradigm that will replace the ancien regime.

Scientific revolutions are almost always advancements in our understanding of the universe. I have my doubts that what is happening qualifies as one.

Follow over the jump for the rest of the past week's stories, all of which bear on a weakness of the Republican presidential ticket.

The first story may be the largest effort at prevention of a crime against the environment on the entire list, the destruction of the tropical rain forest. Not only would this help stem the loss of biodiversity, but it would preserve one of the "lungs of the planet," which are needed to absorb carbon dioxide and slow climate change.

Northern Arizona University: Incentives slow rainforest destruction, researcher says
August 13, 2012

Tropical rainforests are the biggest defense against global warming, absorbing 50 percent more carbon than other kinds of forests. Yet they are disappearing at a rate of about 11 million hectares a year.

Yeon-Su Kim, a Northern Arizona University ecological economic professor, is researching how economic incentives may slow the destruction of these important carbon-storing ecosystems and decrease the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.

?We have a way of helping rainforest communities while slowing the process of global warming,? she said.

Sweet.

Of course, the GOP is a bunch of climate change deniers, as detailed in What a Difference a more Northern Latitude makes ... by jamess on Daily Kos. While Romney has been coy about his views on climate change, Paul Ryan has not, as the Washington Post reports.

Ryan?s track record on environmental issues is certainly less green-tinged than Romney?s. For one, Ryan has consistently voted against government efforts to tackle climate change. Like many House Republicans, he has voted to block efforts by the EPA to regulate carbon-dioxide emissions. He approved an amendment that would bar the Department of Agriculture from studying how best to adapt to a warmer planet. Ryan voted to defund various climate-advisory positions within the White House. He also voted for an amendment, proposed by Rep. Judy Biggert (R-Ill.), to cut $50 million from funding for ARPA-E, which funds long-shot energy research and development.
Eddie Munster is an out-and-out denier. Then again, given what Objectivists think about the environment, that shouldn't come as a surprise.

Fat Cat goes Galt

As for the next item, it bears on Romney's ideas about border security, but also on Romney and Ryan's veracity.

CNN: Meet Elvis: The virtual border official who knows if you're lying
By Tim Hume, CNN
updated 6:54 AM EDT, Wed August 15, 2012

A lie-detecting virtual border official nicknamed "Elvis" is the latest high-tech approach to securing borders in the United States.

Developed by University of Arizona researchers in collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the computer is known as the Automated Virtual Agent for Truth Assessments in Real-Time -- or AVATAR -- kiosk.

It uses sensors to screen passengers for unusual physiological responses to questioning -- which can indicate a subject is lying.

"What we're looking for is changes in human physiology," said Doug Derrick, a member of the University of Arizona team behind the project.

I wonder what Elvis/AVATAR would make of most political candidates, starting with Romney and Ryan? Speaking of Willard the Rat, here's a story about preventing bullying.

University of Arizona: UA Psychiatrist Gives Tips on How to Banish Bullying
Back-to-school season is a good time to talk to your kids about bullying, says Dr. John Leipsic, UA assistant clinical professor of child psychiatry.
Arizona Health Sciences Center
August 13, 2012

Back-to-school season gives parents and kids a lot to think about ? new classroom supplies, goodies for sack lunches, the all-important first-day outfit. It?s also a good time for parents to talk to their children about the kind of social interactions they might encounter at school, says Dr. John Leipsic, assistant clinical professor of child psychiatry at the University of Arizona.

Leipsic, a father of three school-age girls and director of pediatric psychiatric consultation services at The University of Arizona Medical Center, recently shared some tips for parents on how to talk to their kids about one of the most age-old problems on the playground ? bullying.

U of A also published an item about unethical business practices, which is on the same topic.

University of Arizona: UA Research: Sleep Deprivation Can Influence Professional Behavior
In a recent paper, Aleksander Ellis of the UA Eller College of Management and a colleague demonstrate that lack of sleep can cause deviant behavior at work.
By Lia Samson, Eller College of Management
August 7, 2012

Early 2011 saw a spate of reports in the media about air traffic controllers sleeping on the job as a result of sleep deprivation. The potential harm from this behavior is obvious, but what about the average office job? Can sleep deprivation cause counterproductive, or even unethical, behavior in organizations?

?Over the past decade, Americans have been getting less and less sleep, and estimates are that this trend will continue,? said Professor of Management and Organizations Aleksander Ellis, the Charles and Candice Nelson Fellow. ?In fact, in certain industries, lack of sleep is worn as a badge of honor.?

In a recent paper published in the Academy of Management Journal, Ellis and co-author Michael Christian of Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill demonstrate that lack of sleep can cause deviant behavior.

Robots don't need to sleep, or do they?

Allow me this aside before I present the final story from Arizona, which is particularly apt given Romney's embrace of Birtherism in Commerce Township, Michigan, on Friday. WOOD-TV has the relevant sound bite.

In addition to the obvious subtext, an additional one to consider is that no one should underestimate hatred of Detroit in Michigan politics. This includes the suburbs, especially the more distant ones like Commerce. Speaking of racism, one of the excuses racists use is fear of crime. Little do they know that their racism fuels more criminal activity, making it an ironic vicious circle.

Arizona State University: Study: Racial socialization reduces effects of racial discrimination on crime
Posted: August 16, 2012

A new study, published in this month?s American Sociological Review, showed how experiencing racial discrimination increases the risk of crime among young African-American males. More importantly, results found that those risks are reduced by adaptive parenting practices in African American families known as racial socialization.

?A number of previous studies have shown that racial discrimination may increase the risk of offending among African-Americans, especially males,? said Callie Burt, an assistant professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University. ?And so in this study we were interested in understanding ?how does this happen???

Burt and a team of researchers followed 700 African-American families who were originally located in Iowa or Georgia over an eight-year period. The caregivers and their children were interviewed every two years starting when they were in the fifth grade.

?What we were interested in looking at is how different situations ? how kinds of interactions ? differ between African-Americans and whites?? Burt said. ?And in particular we focused on one thing that African-Americans experienced that Whites do not ? and that?s interpersonal racial discrimination.?

Racism promotes criminality, which is used to justify racism. I wonder if that's a bug or a feature. Probably both.

That's it for this edition. In honor of U of A contributing the majority of the stories from their state, I present the Wildcat Marching Band marching their pregame show from 2008.

Alleged LL Cool J intruder has criminal record

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The man charged with breaking into LL Cool J's house earlier this week has a lengthy criminal record that includes a manslaughter conviction in Texas, court records show.

Authorities say the actor-rapper subdued Jonathan A. Kirby early Wednesday after finding the man in his Los Angeles home, breaking Kirby's nose, jaw and ribs in the process.

Kirby, 58, has a lengthy arrest and criminal history in LA, but also was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in Dallas in 1988.

Records show Kirby was sentenced to six years of imprisonment, but was paroled the following year. By January 1990 he had been arrested on a prostitution-related charge in West Hollywood, and in 1995 was convicted of felony residential burglary. He is charged with the same offense in the LL Cool J incident and could face 38 years to life in prison if convicted.

No additional details about the circumstances of the Texas manslaughter conviction were available Friday.

Prosecutors want Kirby, a transient who has used different names and dates of birth over the years, treated as a third-strike offender.

Authorities say LL Cool J, whose real name is James Todd Smith, and his family were unharmed during the break-in, and nothing was apparently taken from their home.

Kirby has yet to make a court appearance and had to be hospitalized because of his injuries.

In Home Care and The Sandwich Generation: How to Balance ...

Many parents are finding themselves in the position of raising their children, and concurrently caring for their aging and elderly parents. This phenomenon has been called The Sandwich Generation because these parents are caring for two generations. It has been estimated between 7 to 10 million people in the U.S. are in the position of being responsible for making decisions for both their parents and children. Inherent to this of type of double caregiving are the stressors related to balancing time and roles, while still having time for one?s own life and marriage. Below are some tips for those in the sandwich generation to lessen the stress associated with this role.

Involve Family Members in the Discussion and Responsibilities

Caregiving with family members is often a one person show, but it doesn?t have to be. Discuss with other family members, including adolescents if they can help with some of the everyday household tasks to help the aging parents. Look for ways to set up a schedule in which the responsibilities are shared in a rewarding way, for instance, an adolescent helping with a task he or she enjoys. Communication between the children and the elderly parents is also important so that a sense of family teamwork and support is created. Open communication between the adult children and parents in need of caregiving is essential to discuss plans and options for care, so that the aging parents are included in the decision making rather than decisions being made for them.

Consider Help With In Home Care

To help bridge the gap of responsibilities, consider using an in home care agency to provide assistance with personal and household caregiving tasks for the elderly parent. Help with in home care can free up time that can make it easier to balance the multiple roles and still have time for yourself and your family.

Take Care of Yourself

It is easy to put others first when you?re caring for both your children and parents, but this can lead to burnout and being emotionally and physically drained. Here are a few tips in caring for yourself:

  • Set aside time daily for you, if only 15 minutes, to do an activity that is relaxing and peaceful, like reading, taking a walk, or anything else you enjoy.
  • Set aside specific time to spend with your spouse to continue to nurture and attend to your relationship.
  • Listen to your body, if you feel like you need a break find a way to take it so that you can stay in good health and feel refreshed.
