Fremont's legal bills in a court fight over its illegal immigration ordinance have topped $1 million.
Attorney fees and costs sought by plaintiffs in the case eclipsed that mark when the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund submitted a bill for over $300,000 for its part of the lawsuit.
The American Civil Liberties Union earlier asked a federal judge to award it nearly $710,000.
In a ruling in February, U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp upheld the ordinance's requirement that employers verify workers' immigration statuses, but rejected a part of the rule related to permits for potential renters.
The city and the civil rights groups that challenged the law are appealing parts of the ruling.
